A Sense of Place

This past weekend I had the delightful opportunity to arrange flowers for a dinner party with the homeowner's containers in their home. It is only the 3rd time I have been able to do this and what terrific trust I have received from these clients to do this.
In the home design world, of which I have been a part for over 25 years, it has been critical to both Jay http://www.jonduvall.com/ and me that we design a home in context with its natural environment and its community. We pontificate ad nauseum about the sad developments built across the nation that bear no relationship to the climate, terrain or history. Never mind a reflection of the habiting family.
Flowers too should represent a sense of place. Twisted Oak grows flowers that are happy to live in VIRGINIA with its humid summers and erratic winters. www.vdacs.virginia.gov/vagrown/index.shtml Not flowers that would prefer to live in California or Hawaii. We sell our flowers to regular subscribers "Buy the Bucket" and we become familiar with their homes and tastes and try to fill the buckets w/ appropriate flowers. (With the occasional odd duck to keep things interesting.) Isn't it a treat to go a step further and tailor fit arrangements for home and occasion on site with containers who live there!
